Oh God I Need Her to Stay: So in regards to that statistics post that says 31% of trans people commit suicide and 50% attempt before they're...
Do you think they’d give Adam that kind of storyline? (ATTEMPT ONLY). Or would he be part of the 50% who made it through? I wonder…..
is it bad to say that I hope so? It’s such a huge part of the trans community (and the LGBT community as a whole) Degrassi is…
Any kind of suicide storyline is always playing with fire, because as important as it is not to erase the experiences of those who have dealt with the suicide of loved ones or lived through attempts and ideation, you also want to avoid potentially triggering someone who has been contemplating. There’s been an unfortunate history of regional areas of the US experiencing “suicide epidemics” as the death of one student triggered that of others (sometimes LGTBQ, sometimes not) in the same school district.
Also, the reality of it is that it’s impossible to accurately reflect a diverse community of people in one character. I’d personally really like to see Adam connecting with a group of other trans* kids (either online or in person) to create some diversity in experiences. I like that Adam is getting on fairly well and being read as cis by his classmates, but I understand that just because that’s what I believe all teenagers deserve doesn’t mean that’s what trans* teens actually experience.

I don’t even need Adam to be happy, at this point. I would just really, really appreciate it if the next person he had some sort of romantic relation with didn’t have an incompatible GSM identity or wind up with the cis step-brother.
